ADVIL/MOTRIN (Generic Name: IBUPROFEN)

Ibuprofen (ADVIL/MOTRIN) is an anti-inflammatory medicine that works by blocking an enzyme, it causes the reduced production of prostaglandins and thromboxane, this effect helps to reduce pain, swelling, and fever. It is used mainly for the treatment of an inflammatory condition such as mild to moderate pain, pain of musculoskeletal inflammation such as gout and arthritis, relieve headache, dysmenorrhea, or period cramps, and reduces fever and pain due to the common cold.

SAVE DOSAGE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Read all the instructions on the package before taking this medication. Take the dose as prescribed by your doctor and take this medication at the minimum effective dose to reduce your risk of stomach bleeding and avoid its side effects. It works during the initial stages of mild or moderate pain or swelling.

PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Do not take it if you are allergic to it, aspirin or NSAIDs

  • Do not take it in case of pre-existing stomach disorder or ulcers
  • Stop using it in case you feel any change in your eye-sight
  • Stop using it in case of any swelling, skin rash, or shortness of breath
  • Stop using it in case of any sign of stomach bleeding

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION

It is not recommended to take after 20 weeks of gestation as it may cause premature closure of ductus arteriosus, kidney dysfunction in the fetus, and oligohydramnios. It is excreted in small amounts in breast milk and is considered a safe drug in lactating mothers. So it is given to lactating mothers based on the benefits versus risk ratio.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

It interferes with the anti-thrombotic effect of aspirin thus there is an increased risk of bleeding. Ask your doctor before taking aspirin if you are taking any other medication, especially

  • Heart or blood pressure lowering medicine such as captopril, losartan
  • Lithium
  • Steroids such as prednisolone
  • NSAIDs or Aspirin
  • Blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin
  • Methotrexate 
  • Cyclosporine
